very satisfied with the service and the cost

by TheSmithRanch at Citysearch

Ray's saved us about $500 over the dealer estimate. Since he was able to isolate which catalytic converter was bad, we only had to have one replaced and not the set. They also did the replacement of a sensor that had apparently caused the failure of the coverter. They had our vehicle repaired in one day, and we were glad to have it back on the road again, and the extra $500 in the savings account.

  • Cons: shop is on a busy street, only parking was in front of the shop and was limited

Overpriced parts and poor work quality...

by coolbreeze19888 at Citysearch

I should have seen the red flags when they would not offer a written estimate before doing the work...

I was severely overcharged for parts on an exhaust overhaul (about $400 more than the two shops I called after leaving Ray's with a $1200 set of pipes and a muffler!).

The exhaust suddenly began leaking loudly at the manifold about 2 months after the install and they wanted me to pay them an hrly rate to repair the previous work. They also forgot to secure the transmission wiring harness after the second visit which caused my vehicle to stall on the expressway (no fun!). I undoubtedly went elswhere to get the wiring harness repaired.

I will never consider doing business with Ray's again.

We won't be back

by MisterBeck at Citysearch

My wife called a bunch of places to get estimates on replacing a catalytic converter on our Jeep Liberty. Of the people she called, Ray's gave the lowest estimate, saying it would be between $150 and $180. We dropped off the Jeep before they opened the next morning, and left the key as they instructed.

A man from Ray's called my wife at work to say that if she couldn't tell him which catalytic converter needed replacing, he'd have to charge for diagnostics, and depending on which converter needed replacing, it could be well over $300. Wondering why he hadn't explained this the day before on the phone, she told him not to touch the Jeep, and that we'd be back to get it.

Upon our arrival, I spoke with the man behind the desk about what we perceived was a typical bait-and-switch, making the point that he could've been more up front about what the cost might be when my wife first called him. I never raised my voice, and I asked what I believed to be reasonable questions, but he was nevertheless pretty short with me (when I mistakenly used the word "quote" he said sharply, "It wasn't a QUOTE, it was an ESTIMATE").

He offered to put the rear converter on for $180, acknowledging it might not be the one needing replaced, and I declined, saying another shop had given us an estimate only slightly above his, with diagnostics included. Irritated by his demeanor, I told him we wouldn't be bothering him anymore, and he said, "Good!"
