"FAT SLOB" – An employee of Cunningham's called me a "fat slob" as I rode by on my bicycle, and the manager I spoke with on the phone was rude, combative, and blamed it on me. I will not ever, ever, ever eat at Cunningham's again (as if I'm interested in instant mashed potatoes and salty, filmy gravy anyway). I will do everything in my power to suggest that others boycott this disgrace of an establishment.
If You Expect Good Customer Service Don't Go Here!!! – On Sunday, April 17, 2011 myself and a group decided to go to Cunninghams after a play right across the street called "What My Husband Doesn't Know". I had eaten there before but it had been several years. My last experience there was good so I was excited to enjoy their wellknown fish again. Due to the play; business was booming and they were very busy. However; when seated we discovered we had been double seated by the receptionist by the patrons that were orignially seated at the table. They were cordial so we apoligized and got up to let them have their seats. We then notifed the receptionist of the issue to re-seat us. This took some time but we finally did get seated but then waited for quite some time again for the waiter to take our orders. He finally got to us and we all decided on the buffet.
The food was good but does not make any apoligies for their poor CUSTOMER SERVICE. I decided to bring it to the waiters attention who had witnessed our ordeal. He did apoligize and brought the manger on duty "John" to the table to hear our complaint. John was abrupt and RUDE and did nothing to apoligize. In fact he stated that was just the way it is here and they don't make any consessions!!! He then referred me to the owner "George" to voice my complaint. Today, I talked to George and to my surprise he also was also adrupt and very RUDE and made no apoligies for his staff or himself!!! He went on to tell me that he has been in business for 30 years!!!
I thought to myself, does that give an establishment the right to be RUDE to their patrons!!! And does he not know the value after all those years of Good Customer Service!!! I mentioned these thoughts to him and again his replies were VERY RUDE!!! He even asked me "What is he suppose to do?" The food industry is a hard business and in my opinion beside having something good to sell, customer service is a defining factor of a patron(s) experience. I will not EVER go back to this place but wanted to share my experience to let others know that we (the patrons) have the power to set the bar and demand good customer service no matter how long the business has been in service!!! POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!
Food - Great; Service - Lousy – I love this place. The food and location are fantastic. Unfortunately, service is shoddy. I went to the bar to pay my check and the person working at the bar told me I had to pay my waiter. I explained that would be a bit of a trick since he had been pretty non-existent and I really didn't want to wait all day to pay and I needed change. The person at the bar said he didn't have any help at the bar and no cash to give me change and I would have to wait. I didn't move and said that was fine. So the person at the bar meets with my waiter to cash the ticket. After I asked the bar person to speak with the manager and he tells me HE'S THE MANAGER. Seriously? I said your waiter might be complaining to you later about how he didn't get much in tips today. The response -- "that's his problem!" Oh really? You're the manager and you don't think horrible service is YOUR problem. Let us know how that works out for you.
The worst experience of my life........ – Not even worth the single star. By far the worst dining experience of my life. We had reservations for diner before a concert at the Palace, were seated early before the place filled up about 2 hours before show time. Took awhile to get drinks, but they were busy so I understand but then we ordered, over 1 hour later, still no food. And she never even came back to refill drinks. Noticed other people at tables getting up to get their own Cokes from the machine! Tables that were seated 20-30 minutes after us were eating, some done with dinner and already left. She never put our order in and had the nerve to say that steaks take a long time to cook to cover her butt. AN HOUR, IT TAKES AN HOUR TO COOK A STEAK? Come on!!!! Finally had to ask for manager, we were treated very poorly. Owner to proud, basically said while laughing at us, go somewhere else, they have enough business. Never will I ever go back, never will I suggest this place to anyone. If you try it, just know the service is terrible. The food might be good, but good luck.
Good value – As I've read in reviews, here and in other places, the servers are very nice and friendly. I work nearby a day or two a week, and have often received a warm greeting as I passed by on the street. The food is better than average, too. The fish dinners are massive, with way more fish than any one person needs to eat. I often get takeout, and recently got the broiled fish dinner, and must have had around a pound of fish (I made a few meals out of that!). During a business lunch there a couple of years ago, I got one of the best chef salads I've ever had, with actual carved turkey--not the supermarket deli-type meat that is often served in that type of salad. My main complaint (and it's not a minor one) is getting some well-past-its-prime cole slaw in my husband's and my takout meals once a year or so ago. Of course, there was no way of knowing until I was at home and I didn't ask for any reparations to be made, so I'm not sure what they would have done had they found out. I feel sure the restaurant would have made up for the glitch. A Sunday visit is on my list of things to do!
Depends on what you order – There is good and bad on the menu. If you go for lower priced items like the spaghetti, you will get what you pay for. Don't order spaghetti there lol. They served the spaghetti with hard bread as well. The exception to that lower priced item rule is the huge and affordable Cunningham burger.
What I recommend is the fish or fried chicken, and the onion rings. If you order a steak you better specify that they put seasoning on it, or it will be bland. I ask for Lawry salt on mine.
Things that were bad: spaghetti, salads made with big chunks of bitter iceberg lettuce, and the hot brown (covered in fake cheese sauce from a can, we saw them do this).
It is a very friendly staff. However the new restaurant downtown (the old one burned down) doesn't have the same atmosphere as the first one, even though they try to replicate it by building horse stalls to eat in (lol that sounds funny but it is true)
Still it is a good way to eat if you are downtown at affordable prices.
Also on sundays they have a great brunch buffet with a little bit of everything.
