killer sauce, wonderful staff, one of the best pies in the country, home of the 20 pound pizza. It's been a few years since I've eaten at "Benny's", but it was always a must when traveling to Louisville. We got a garden type pizza and one slice will do you! It was HUGE! Nice thick sauce, and held together well. Benny gave me pointers on making homemade sauce, and even let me buy a couple of buckets of his to bring home to Missouri with me. I'm hoping to make it back down there someday. Try it out - you will love it.
Bardstown's Best !. The pizza is awesome. It is not your typical fast food pizza. My favorite is the italian sausage. The lasagna is good too. Nice family friendly atmosphere .Great place to watch your favorite sports team. I am talking about the "Original Impellizeri's" on Bardstown Road.
Impellizzeri's.
I have eaten pizza all over the country and we are most fortunate to be able to enjoy pizza
as it was meant to be made. The pizza is built from the ground up with fresh homemade
dough. The sauce is homemade from recipies handed down from one Italian generation
to another. The pasta is homemade as is the slowly cooked sauce. NO shortcuts. The
sausage is homemade as is the breadsticks. The portions are hugh and it does not
get any better!!! This pizza is to Louisville as is the Hot Brown. Created here by one of us
for us. By the way, I hear that the Rolling Stones have been fed by this restaurant.
Shelbyville Road Location - Average at Best. Stopped here to enjoy the lunch buffet. The pizza reminded me of a mini-mart pizza that would be sold by the slice and was poor at best. The spaghetti that was out was at least a day old and the waitress was overloaded (as she was the only one in the house). Rated: Poor at best.
Impellizzeri Pizza. Every time I go through Louisville Impellizzeri's is on the top of my list at least once during a visit. I'm from California and we don't have anything close to that type of pizza.
Top-heavy pies star at this family-owned restaurant in the lower Highlands..
The Scene
Between the photos on the walls and the various Impellizzeris running the place, you know you're in a family-owned pizzeria. The dining room is a bit austere and occasionally smoky--customers can smoke anywhere--but carryout is always available. The friendly staff is very accommodating.
The Food
These pies are loaded and ultrafilling: You'll never have to ask for extra anything. It's Sicilian-style deep-dish pizza, two inches high and smothered with a thick, peppery house-made sauce. Top one with fresh meatballs and Italian sausage and you're in for a treat. Not a carnivore? The piquant vegetarian pie comes weighed down with every nonmeat item on the menu, but ask to leave off the hot peppers if you can't handle the kick. Generous salads and plates of pasta are also available.
Got Coke??. I have only eaten there once. It was several years ago, but I was so surprised. I had heard a lot good comments about the place. I found it to look dirty. The window were smoky. The pizza was OK. The main thing I didn't like was that there were no free refills on drinks. You have this big hot pizza and they want to charge for refills. I would say most all restaurants give refills. I don't plan to go back because of this. Thank you.
Have to Try It. This restaurant has great thick pizza. Its a small place, but location is not indicative of its product, especially if it's Impellizzeri's. The breadsticks have to be the best I have ever tried. The pizza is thick little squares...2 or 3 will fill the average consumer. A must try if you are interested in tasting various types of pizza besides the commercial material from the TV ads.
YUMMY!. Absolutely loved this pizza! The garlic breadsticks are out of this world!
best by far. I believe Impellizzeri's Pizza is the best pizza I have tasted anywhere. Fresh produce is used, it is great. Even moving away from Louisville I have recommended it to friends going to Louisville. Impellizzeri's has no competition anywhere.
