The Scene – SUVs, minivans and motorcycles vie for the few parking spaces outside this St. Matthews parlor. Inside, folks of all ages line up at the long, frosty counter before trying to nab one of the small tables clustered against the store's plate-glass window. – – The Food – Graeter's ice cream is the standard against which all competitors are measured. Creamy mint-chocolate chip is stellar: Pale-green ice cream studded with chunks of premium dark chocolate. Equally enticing is chocolate-coconut almond fudge, amaretto crunch and peanut butter chip.…
Best Ice Cream in Louisville
by marcella_louisvillian
Alright, to set the record straight from previous reviews, this is a chain based in Cincinnatti, although the ice cream for Louisville is made here at the Springhurst location. There are 7 franchised stores in Louisville, and I usually frequent the Hurstbourne Lane location, next to Barnes & Noble. The ice cream is uber yummy! There are over 20 flavors, including the sorbets. The Black Raspberry Chip ice cream is the most popular one, and you can try it and any other flavor you like. Just ask for a sample (yes, they are free!). My other favorites include the Coconut Chip, Peanut Butter Chip, Chocolate Coconut Almond Fudge, and Toffee Chip. I notice that others are "gaga" about their Peach, Peppermint, and Prailines and Cream ice creams, which are seasonal.
Their seasonal flavors stay for about 2-3 months, so each month there will be one or two new ones, and one or two other seasonals will go away. So, they have well over a dozen that stay all the time, and then two to four that will be seasonal. Each location will have a schedule of what seasonals come when, and if they don't have it posted for customers, they should be able to let you see their copy of the seasonal flavors schedules. The staff is very friendly, so just ask!
If you haven't tried their ice cream, you must do so! There's nothing like it in the Louisville area. I love ice cream and have tried about everything in the area since I've been here for over 30 years. Several Krogers in the area also stock it, and I notice that it tends to be in a separate section from the ice cream aisle. I shop at Holiday Manor Kroger, and it is between the produce/fruit aisle and the bread aisle.
- Pros: Taste, Service, Casual atmosphere
- Cons: Can be very busy
Absolutely the best!

I have never had such WONDERFUL ice cream as Graeter's since moving to Louisville 2 years ago. There is nothing like it! Matter of fact, I stopped there this afternoon and split a sundae with my hubby! YUM YUM YUM.
- Pros: Flavorful, Decadent, Out-of-this-world
- Cons: Lacks-atmosphere
Wonderful!

Graeter's has wonderful ice cream! I agree, the Raspberry chocolate chunk is out of this world. But, my favorite is peppermint with hot fudge sauce, nuts, whipped cream and a cherry in a waffle bowl! Their hot fudge sauce is just that... a rich sauce, not a syrup. Just wish they had a drive thru, like the one in Lexington!
