Excellent Zoo! by Ginger L. at InsiderPages

I've always enjoyed going to zoos everywhere I visit, but so many zoos seem a little depressing because it feels like all the animals are just in cages. However, when I moved to Louisville I was pleasantly surprised to find our zoo is a lot different!
They've really striven to have individual habitats for most of the animals so that they are in more natural situations. I'd really like to see that for more of the animals, but at least it's a start!
You definitely have to check out the gorillas and the lorakeets! It's a fun way to spend the day. Make sure you have plenty of time to be leisurely in your walk around the paths here. For some reason it always seems a lot hotter there than walking in another part of town, so drink plenty of fluids and bring a stroller for the kids!!
Stunning landscapes create ecologically sound habitats for a variety of species ranging from pygmy hippos to Siberian tigers.

Facts
The Louisville Zoo is more than just another zoo. More than 1,300 animals from around the globe are featured in naturalistic and mixed-animal settings, creating a well-rounded environment for both visitors and inhabitants.
Features
Horticulturists re-create environments of the Indonesian islands, African grasslands and Asian plains. Tapirs, orangutans and Komodo dragons mix among the trees, rocks and simulated beaches of Malaysia. The Herpaquarium holds more than 100 species of reptiles, amphibians and fish in ecologically balanced surroundings. Check out the black-footed ferret, woolly monkeys, polar bears, Siberian tigers, maned wolves and white rhinos--all play a huge part in the zoo's conservation and species survival programs. Also at the zoo: train rides, snack bars, a gift shop and amphitheater.
